Customers say

Customers find the scanner works well, particularly with Chromebooks, and appreciate its portable design with perfect weight and size. The ease of use receives mixed feedback – while some find it easy to use with a laptop, others report difficult setup on computers. Moreover, the battery life and wireless connectivity are problematic, with customers reporting issues with charging and connection difficulties. Additionally, the scan speed is limited to one page at a time, and customers consider the product not worth the money.

Take anywhere, use without a computer.
I ordered a different model at first and it did not come with the micro sd card feature. Brother does not advertise well and their instructions are terrible. I look at a lot of websites to see what people who have bought the product are saying. The instruction did not say to fast press the on/off button to turn it on and did not say you have to press and hold the on/off button for 6 seconds and then let go to turn it off. Almost returned it because the lights were flashing and slow to respond when turning on and off. After figuring out that on and off procedure, the scanner worked flawlessly. I like the double sided scan feature and you do not need a computer if you are saving to the SD card. I bought this brand and model because on a government computer, you cannot just hook up any hardware and put in any software without getting approval from the IT department which usually do not allow anything they do not know about. You would think being part of the largest organization in the State that you would have the best of everything. The exact opposite is true. I have antique hardware and am using Microsoft 2013 which was a recent upgrade from Microsoft 2003. The lazerjet printer looks like it belongs in a museum. This scanner solved my problem. It plugs in and becomes an external drive. It scans 14 pages in 40 seconds or less. It can scan in the jpeg or pdf format. It takes up very little space on your desk and is very quiet. You can scan and save through Wi Fi, SD card, or USB cable. The utilities software is alright, not the greatest and like all other brands, they allow you a sample of the PDF software but want you to buy the full version. They make like it comes with the full version of the software but then it begs you to buy it.The only thing is that you cannot scan a page in a book. The page you are scanning has to pass through the scanner, unlike a scanner bed which will allow you to scan an open book. Not unless you rip out the page and pass it through the scanner. I use this scanner everyday at work and it is holding up very well.Legal documents, maps, timesheets, can be scanned and sent through your computer saving you a trip from your remote office to your main office saving you time, money, and gas. Especially with the price of gas today, you will be happy you purchased this scanner. Do not forget to buy the hard case to protect your scanner. I take my scanner where ever I go.

    Good desktop printer
The Brother DS-940DW is a great little scanner for anyone who needs something portable and easy to use. It’s lightweight, compact, and fits easily in a bag, making it perfect for traveling or small workspaces. The duplex scanning feature is super handy since it scans both sides of a document at once, and the wireless connectivity means no fumbling with cords—you can scan straight to your phone or computer. The built-in battery is a big plus, letting you use it anywhere without needing to be plugged in. It handles receipts, documents, and even photos really well, with sharp and clear results. The only downsides are that you have to feed pages in manually, and the initial setup can take a little patience. Overall, it’s a solid choice for light scanning needs and super convenient for anyone on the move.

Buggy firmware, constant feed errors, pages cut off
I attempted to get into the web-based control panel to configure various settings, but after navigating a page or two you are immediately logged out. I went to go upgrade the firmware, thinking that issue would be fixed in a later version, but upgrading the firmware REQUIRES Windows and the proprietary Windows drivers; I have read that some Mac users have had success but it doesn’t always work. The Linux SANE drivers are crap and don’t work half the time. When they do work, the page is cut off near the end when scanning at higher resolutions.Feeding the scanner will often fail right as soon as it starts to scan. The lack of a document feeder for alignment could have been mitigated by a less finicky feed mechanism, but that is not the case here. Every other scan it would fail to feed properly without any visible reason and require opening/closing the cover, even if there was not a document stuck (if they got stuck at the entrance like what happened 90% of the time, they could simply be pulled out).Either I got a bad item or this thing sucks. Never been so disappointed in a Brother product before. Got the Doxie Q2 for the same price and, while it does not support direct scanning because it does not utilize scanner drivers and instead scans directly to its own internal storage, the Webhook feature and actually functional web interface makes up for that. The ease of scanning and scan quality is also way better.

This thing is AMAZING .. use it with WAVE accounting and it essentially works flawlessly
What I like…The footprint of this device is amazing. Even if you do not travel it just compliments the desk and it is not bulky. Many complain of no multi document feeder but this is not what this device is for. Scans are great .. this is not for high rez photos .. it is for documents and receipts and it does that with a great deal of clarity. The software allows you to set up one touch buttons for various types of scans that you may want to do.What I did not like…The documentation for connecting this thing to WIFI is nothing short of terrible. If you have a mesh system like ORBI that does not allow you to separate 2.4 and 5ghz bands this will not connect during setup. After a ton of $%^$%^&#ing around I discovered the bottom of the unit has a ton of info including s/w registration numbers. The key is the hotspot infrastructure wifi .. basically you connect to that with you phone or other then open the management page from the device .. I believe it is 192.168.118.1 .. all of the passwords you need are printed on the bottom of the unit. Once you get in you can configure the SSID and PW for your mesh wireless. After configuration the unit works fine on mesh. I do not know why setup can’t find the wireless but if you manually set it using the method above you will have success.lastly .. it appears (not 100% on this yet) that it will only charge the onboard battery with the USB cable connected to a computer. Connecting it to a power adapter does power the unit but does not appear to charge the battery. Not sure why this would be but, in any case, I do not travel with my device and if I did, I guess I just have to plug it into a pc to charge it.The wifi setup is the sole reason for 4 stars for this device.

I was truly FURIOUS at first coz of extreme difficulty doing the wireless setup with my home network!! Then i finally figured out had to do the WIFI DIRECT pairing with my tablet first >> Then whilst still connected in this mode, click “Machine Settings” at bottom left-hand corner of app. Which opens up the Admin Portal in your browser. Key-in default password (indicated on label stuck under scanner) and Login. Go to “Network” tab >> “Wireless (Setup Wizard)” … after that was a no-brainer. Just need your Wireless Network SSID credentials handy. And wish that instructions were much clearer from onset, plssse!!! Btw, after you’re done with the admin portal, don’t forget to change its default logon password for security!

It’s a portable, battery powered scanner. It does exactly what it says it does, although I noticed a prior review that mentioned that the scanner can’t connect to existing wifi networks, so I wanted to correct that.- The scanner DOES support this type of connection through its “infrastructure mode” setting. If you look up the model number and “infrastructure mode”, you should be able to find instructions to set it up in the online owner’s manual (not sure about the physical manual). Long story short, you need to connect to the scanner’s network, then access the scanner’s direct IP address (should be 192.168.118.1), log into the web interface, and set it up in there. It’s not a desktop driver setting. I set it up to use both infrastructure and direct wifi connections, so I can still connect to the scanner directly if I’m not connected to the wifi network that I set up.- In case you missed it, max DPI is 1200×1200. Desktop driver supports 300x, 400x, 600x, and 1200x. I think it supports 100x and 200x, but I don’t use those.- The DSD… thing, is just a piece of plastic. Stays in place well when closed, but is loose when open. It also directs the output upward at a 90 degree angle, bend is roughly 3/8 of an inch or so. DO NOT USE this “feature” for items that you don’t want bent!- For scanning things thicker than paper, the scanner can reportedly handle up to 48 pt thickness. I’ve been scanning 35pt cards (mtg, yugioh, as well as some sports cards) with thin plastic sleeves over them without issue; rollers are rubber with enough pressure to move the card with plastic through the scanner without damaging the card features. I don’t expect that any thicker will be doable though. Definitely not a graded slab, that’s for sure.- Scanner is designed to accept documents from the left side; there is a feed sensor about an inch from the left side that is used to detect the presence of things to scan.- No tray for multi-document feeds; this scanner is only designed to scan one item at a time.- Duplex scanning happens all at once; no need for the document being scanned to run through the machine backwards or anything like that.- Even with all image processing turned off, I noticed that the machine has some trouble with detecting where a document starts in the case where the document is covered in plastic (like the aforementioned cards). I’ve got it mostly dialed in now, but originally it would either overscan slightly or underscan slightly, maybe by a margin of +- 1mm? Not a problem for regular paper documents but for scanning details of cards sometimes it misses the card edges.- The web interface for the scanner is surprisingly capable. It’s about what you’d expect from a printer/scanner interface, but there are some features that I wouldn’t expect to see in a consumer scanner that are nice-to-haves for someone with more tech know-how.Overly, very satisfied with this purchase.

I bought this to replace my (printer + scanner) which is bulky and I seldom do printing. The brother scanner is light weight and compact. Scanner is easy to use and scanning speed is fast enough for my purposes.
